Why is reselling so hard?

Is reselling really this hard?

This might be a question that you ask yourself every so often...or maybe every morning. :-)

Reselling inconsistently is not as hard as you think.

Building a long-term/sustainable reselling business is more difficult than you realize. Much more difficult.

This is the truth.

The #1 question I get from folks is "WHY IS IT SO HARD TO DO THIS EVERY DAY?"

I can sympathize, I've been there...and it's not a pleasant question to be constantly asking yourself. So, here are 3 reasons why reselling typically becomes difficult and potentially overwhelming.

#1. No plan.

"A man without a plan, plans to fails"

If you aren't planning how you are going to be successful as a reseller, you have an extremely low chance at success. Even if your plan is completely hogwash, at least you have a plan. :-)

No, you likely aren't going to understand your perfect recipe early on in your journey, but you should have a basic outline of where you think you are going. Basic questions within that plan should include:

  • PRODUCT
    • How am I going to source?
    • How will I pay for my inventory?
    • What margins will I expect for my purchases?
    • What is the PERFECT item for my store?
    • How long do I expect this item to sit within my store?
  • SELLING
    • Where will I sell this product?
    • What is my process for listing/marketing/communicating?
    • Who is my target customer?
    • Does my current store provide opportunities for growth?
  • PROCESS
    • How will I ensure I don't get distracted from selling?
    • How can I do this again tomorrow or next week?

This is an extremely simple set of questions, but you get the picture. Start organizing a written plan to identify how you be successful.

#2 No consistency

The hardest thing to do as a reseller is to stay consistent.

You are going to want to give up, restart, reset, try something different, do something different, sell somewhere else, etc... the list of distractions will be endless.

If you want to crush reselling you have to get up every morning with a different type of mindset. You have to KNOW that it's YOUR job to list, market, communicate, and sell. If you don't, then you won't grow. Period.

Consistency will look different depending on your specific goals. Some sellers just want to build a weekly cadence and find a way to build that into their routine. Some sellers want to grow faster with a daily cadence. It's all relative, but the principle is equally important.

You need to be consistent.

Source consistently. Network consistently. Market consistently. List consistently. Communicate consistently. Organize consistently. Price consistently. Ship consistently. Follow-up consistently. Rest consistently. Do it all again, consistently.

#3 No Data

If you hang around here long enough you'll realize one common trait... I love data. Metrics are so widely available and SO important to optimizing your reselling business.

Many resellers I talk with have no idea what their baseline metrics are... metrics like:

  • Average Sell-Through Rate
  • Average Profit Margin
  • Average Cost to Sell
  • Inventory Turnover
  • Daily/Weekly Impressions
  • Repeat Buyers vs First Time Buyers
  • Promotional Success Rates
  • Top Products / Worst Products
  • Plenty more...

It might seem like knowing this type of information is overkill. But I can assure you that if you start to dig into some of your key metrics, you'll start to understand how/why your reselling business isn't reaching it's full potential. More importantly, you'll start to understand where you need to focus your energy. It's usually not where you think...

Look up some of those metrics, and open up the dashboard in your selling platform and start learning!

Hope that helps, get out there and start crushing your business. You hold the keys.
